I have compared some methods for evolving NN architectures in my
msc. thesis, which is available from:

Two of the encoding methods were INSPIRED by L-systems (the methods by
Kitano and Cangelosi et al.). There is also a section about the
generative fractal growth process, which is also the idea behind
L-systems.
      I give also descriptions of some other evolutionary NN methods in
the introduction in Chapter 4.

Some more advanced methods are the ones by Boers and Kuiper (1992) and
Gruau (1994).
