I've never understood basic Ubuntu, or Debian for that matter, except for their packaging system. Gnome in particular is a hideous abhorrence designed by folk with no experience with the (very few) good things in Windows (as it was on 90s-00s), while taking the worst from Apple.
KDE solved that, hence Kubuntu is great, as are other Ubuntu-based KDE-default distros. RedHat understood the greatness of KDE much earlier, the problem was just in RPM that sucked. I haven't followed how the RPM ecosystem is doing nowadays though.
